Today there
are close to 30,000 senior citizens living
in Santa Rosa. Over the next 12 years that
number is expected to double, equaling 30%
of our population by the year 2020. While
many seniors still drive and have incomes
that support healthy lifestyle, many more do
not. Without transportation, adequate
nutrition, and opportunities for
socialization, many seniors live a fragile
and isolated existence.
Santa Rosa’s only dedicated Senior Center is
an 80-year-old building with the capacity to
serve just 750 seniors each week. Popular
classes are now standing room only and the
facility has no room for expansion. It has
no air conditioning, inadequate parking and
the boiler room floods with heavy rainfall.
In a community that prides itself as the
“California Cornucopia” we have yet to
provide a place of plenty for our elders.
